Texas Pride

I’ve lived in and visited several states across the country but Texas definitely stands out with their state pride.  I don’t think I’ve ever encountered as many state flags or stars celebrating the state in any of my travels.  These aren’t just businesses either – Texas flags and/or stars are everywhere – in people’s homes, on people’s homes, vehicles here are branded as a “Texas edition”, fast food restaurants have specially named meals to include some variant of Texas in the title, and the list goes on.

Some people might call it cultural elitism but even if it is, I find it endearing.  I have several pictures to illustrate what I’m talking about.

All Bud Light bottles in Texas, have a picture of Texas and the Texas star.
Beneath the beer bottle are Mission tortillas that are Texas Sized!
H-E-B = main Texas grocery store chain.
Are there pictures of your state on coolers at the grocery store?
Texas-size baking cups!
Texas grapefruits as stated on the box and the signage.
Locally grown in Texas – go Texan!

And just in case you forgot where you were.

Have you ever seen this anywhere else?  Is there a Florida edition of a truck?  Have you seen labels next to your produce stating “Go Colorado”?  Alaska is even bigger than Texas – is there Alaska sized baking cups?

  1. A fellow Texan here and I totally know what you mean!

People from other states have told me they've never seen anything like it. Texas pride is a huge part of our culture – even more so than football. ;)

  2. Damn straight! LOL! I love our Texas pride. A couple things I think most people know about Texas:
    Everything's bigger in Texas
    Don't mess with Texas

    lol! xo

Hi! I'm a Texan, and I 100% know what you mean, and I'm honestly totally ok with it lol. In my opinion, all of those Texas flag purses, shirts, and college rings from Texas schools make it easier to pinpoint fellow Texans in other states.

My husband moved to New York City right out of college for his job back in June of 2006. I was still in my undergrad program for genetics and biology and I spent my entire Christmas break up there that year.

I was on the subway going downtown, and I saw a lady get on with a typically huge, obnoxious Texas flag purse. So, naturally, we got to talking and as it turned out her husband ran one of quality control labs for a company up there, and I was looking for an internship for the summer so I could spend it with my now husband (then boyfriend). She passed along my information to her husband, who set me up with an interview. It is thanks to that giant Texas flag purse that got me started though.

Also, I agree with you about not seeing any other state's flags on things like purses. I have never in my life seen any other state so darn proud to show off their flags, logos, etc. than ours.

  5. I think it's fun! I'm not sure about NC because the shape of it is boring, but Michigan did a lot of that too. :)

  6. I don't have much state pride today…usually I do, today I'm in a "WHAT? We provide welfare for illegal immigrants who've been conviceted of crimes???" mood.

  8. As a Texas native, I can tell you I have never seen state pride like Texas! I even a tattoo of the state to porve my pride!

I visited Texas for the first time last year and was so shocked at the "state pride" that I came home and wrote an entire blog post about it. LOL

  10. Wow, that is amazing! I haven't ever seen this and I have only been to NH and Vermont mostly. Have family in both and I reside in NH. I think that would be amazing to see!

Hi, fellow Texan.. I'm your newest follower on GFC, Twitter, email and I tried to follow on Facebook but it said "Page not found", I also voted for you on The Picket Fence. Found you through The Old Block House.

Hope y'all have a great Easter!

  12. Nope, I live in Washington and it's hard to find souvenirs with WA stuff on it!

I am a new follower from Mom bloggers Linky! Love for you to stop by and say hi!

    Happy Easter!

  13. That's so funny! I'm originally from Illinois and we definitely didn't have Illinois pride. :) A lot of people here in Wisconsin are big into being cheeseheads, though–but I still don't think it's to the extent of what you have in Texas!

  14. Here in Kansas we are very proud, of sunflowers, and Dorothy LOL Seriously, wizard of oz stuff is EVERYWHERE. Don't laugh too much, but in October we even have "OZtoberfest." However, with all this Kansas pride, I have to admit that it is small in comparison to Texan pride. But heck, everything is bigger in Texas!

  15. Just wanted you to know I linked to this and your other Texas Pride post on my This is Wherever Wednessday Post. :-)
