Our Sustainable Living Plan with Unilever #BetterTogether

The holidays may be over but that doesn’t mean that it’s time to forget about your goodwill towards men and all of the random acts of kindness that made you feel good just a few short weeks ago.  Instead this should be an opportunity to extend those warm and fuzzy feelings and integrate giving back to others as part of your lifestyle year round.

Lucky for us all there’s an easy way to give back that’s nearly effortless.  As I mentioned last week by purchasing Unilever products when shopping for everyday items like soap, lotion, peanut butter, and tea bags you can help Unilever’s continued efforts to Cross Off Hunger through Feeding America.  Feeding America is the nation’s largest organization dedicated to fighting domestic hunger through a network of food banks.  $1 = 8 meals secured by Feeding America on behalf of local food banks.  Unilever will donate $250,000 – the monetary equivalent of a minimum of 2 million meals will be donated.  Just think of the impact that will make and all of the hungry mouths that will be filled!

Unilever’s dedication to giving back doesn’t end with Feeding America.  Instead, Unilever has created a sustainable living plan involving three main concepts:

  1. Improved Health and Well Being.
  2. Reduced Environmental Impact.
  3. Enhanced Livelihoods.

Throughout the year, I try to find ways to give back to organizations and individuals around me from monetary donations to perishable/toiletry items.  For my family’s part in giving back in the new year, I’ve purchased Unilever products that I’ll be donating to a local food bank through my daughter’s preschool.  My daughter’s preschool collects items for Austin area food banks twice a month – once for non-perishable goods and the other for health and hygiene items.

I decided to purchase Unilever products for our January donation so that it would not only benefit Feeding America but also our local food bank.  Since spreads are among the most in demand items for food banks because they are such a kid-friendly source of protein, I decided to assemble jars of Skippy Natural Peanut Butter and jelly for my donation.  I was pleased to find some jelly and Skippy Natural Peanut Butter which does not have any high fructose corn syrup or other added ingredients.  I know that if my daughter enjoys Skippy Natural Peanut Butter other kids will enjoy it too!

For the second part of our donation, we’ll be giving health and hygiene items to increase health and well being of the members of our community.  As a woman, I know the importance of feeling clean and smelling good for not only health but self confidence.  Products from Unilever brands such as Vaseline, Dove, and Degree all smell good and help to ensure that local citizens that are down on their luck can not only take care of their health but feel a little better about themselves in the process.

My commitment to supporting our local food bank through biweekly food bank donations is only a small part in helping Cross Off Hunger but it’s the little things that help make a big difference.  To learn more about how you can help Unilever and their mission to Cross Off Hunger make sure to visit their website, connect with them on Facebook, or follow them on Twitter.

  1. I’ve volunteered at my loval food bank a few times and the hygene items are always in need. Many generous people donate food, but a lot of people don’t realize that the food banks also like things like diapers, shampoo, toothpaste, etc. Whenever I buy stuff to donate, I try to donate as much food as I do hygene products.

  2. I need to get more involved. You are sending a great message to your kids too!

  3. That is the peanut butter we buy! I LOVE it, all natural but doesn’t separate.

  4. I love that a company like Unilever has such a great sustainable living plan. I hope more corporations will look at the great things that they are doing.

  5. I adore that they have a sustainable living plan. We donate to a local food pantry here all the time. It is great to teach the kids about giving all year long.

  6. This is wonderful! You’ve also inspired me to give more this year. I know I could be doing better in that area.

  7. We always donate food, I never think to donate personal care items too. That is a good idea!

  8. I really want to get more involved with giving back in my community, but ever since they closed the community food bank, I have to drive about an hour away to donate time or supplies to the homeless shelter. :( Sometimes it’s easier just to donate money.

  9. what a great cause!

  10. such a great thing you are doing. Keep up the good work

  11. Thanks for participating and spreading awareness!
