ADHD 504 Plan Tool
Trying to focus in a busy environment can be a struggle for anyone. But it’s especially challenging for those that have ADHD.
And it’s not just the visual distractions. Classrooms are especially noisy and can make it tough to focus. Even things that might not be distracting to others be distracting to those with ADHD.
Last month we went to a meeting to review Brady’s 504 plan. If you’re not familiar with a 504 plan it basically allows special provisions be made to help those with mental or learning disabilities to get the support they need for success at school.
This is only our second 504 meeting, but we’ve already seen a change year over a year. Because she’s gotten more mature and adjusted to the medication she’s on, we were able to take a lot of things out of Brady’s 504 plan. We got rid of some accommodations that she needed in fourth grade, but some of them she still needs in fifth.
Noises are still a big distraction for her. Even when the teachers try to keep the room quiet things like scooting chairs back, crumpling paper or other people moving around can get Brady off track and make her lose focus.
Her teachers already have her at the front of the classroom, but this year when she’s testing or there’s a need for intense focus, she’s started wearing noise cancelling headphones.
While she can’t listen to music or have it connected to a device in school, the noise-canceling aspect alone is helping to minimize distractions. This is something she thinks will be really beneficial in the upcoming year. And when she gets home she can use those noise cancelling headphones to help block out the sound of her a little sister and keep focused on her homework.
